Tsunami Alert

Regional Tsunami Alert issued for Asia

A regional tsunami alert has been issued for India, Burma, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangledesh by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center following an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.7 this morning off the coast of India.

The quake occurred in the Indian Ocean near the Andaman Islands at 19:55 UTC at a depth of 33.1km (20.6 miles) 365 km (225 miles) southwest of Pathein (Bassein), Burma and 825 km (510 miles) west of Bangkok, Thailand.

The center said it did not know whether a tsunami had been generated as a result of the quake, but warned that quakes of this magnitude have the potential to generate a destructive local tsunami and occasionally a destructive regional tsunami.

The center also warned that the initial wave may not be the largest and that successive waves can be between five minutes to one hour later.
